Smedley Crooke Cup – Round 1.

An excellent first half performance set the Steelmen up for a surprise win over Smedley Crooke Cup favourites Lye Town at Queen Street.

The only step 5 side in the competition were more than matched by the home side with Seegu Sebbeh firing home from the spot and a cool finish from Jason Hewitt putting the underdogs 2-0 ahead.

Lye pulled one back before the break but the lead could have been more with a number of set pieces wasted and a Sufyan Zia free-kick going narrowly the wrong side of the post.

Early in the second half great work from Taimoor on the left set up Nathan Jackson to play a perfect pass off the crossbar (!) for Sebbeh to smash home his second and restore the two goal cushion.

Poor marking led to Lye pulling a goal back just before the hour and the home side had to dig deep to prevent an equaliser with Harry Radford making a couple of key saves when the defence were breached.

It was not all one way traffic though and Bilston could have added a fourth with Taimoor seeing a volley saved, Jackson firing wide when inside the box and Matty Barnett’s long range shot just clearing the bar.

As cup shocks go it was certainly not on the Ronnie Radford scale but Bilston showed they can compete with an experienced step 5 side – now just to extend the first 45 minutes to a full 90 on Saturday at Wellington!

Round two sees us host Pershore Town of the MFL Division One, a date will be advised as soon as we know.

Smedley Crooke Memorial Cup – Round 2.

2nd Round: 11/01/17: 19:45: Coton Green 2-2 Bilston Town Community (2-3 Penalties)

Bilston continued their run of spirited away performances last night, coming from behind before going through with a penalty shoot out victory.

Jayden McCalla gave The Steelmen the ideal start, netting after ten minutes, as Bilston got out the blocks early and looked the better side in those early exchanges.

Coton equalised before half time, with both teams unhappy with some strange refereeing decisions and despite some decent chances, it was Coton who took the lead midway through the second half.

This saw the usual Bilston response as the kitchen sink was deployed as we went in search of the equaliser, urged on by the wonderful Orange Army!

With time running out and the hosts wasting as much time as possible, Ross, Jayden, Roland and Lewis all went close to scoring before Lewis, with minutes remaining, netted the deserved equaliser and almost won it in the dying seconds.

In the penalty shoot out, Ross, Lewis and Jake all netted but hero on the night was Karl Frankham, who saved three of the five Coton penalties to see The Steelmen through, 3-2.

Another never say die display from the lads, another great show of support from the Orange Army and a home tie in the Quarter Finals to look forward to.

Well done to Scott and the lads, and huge thanks to the Orange Army.

Rule 15(e) states that “in any one season a player shall not play for more than one competing club”.
The Management Committee have concluded that Boldmere S&S Falcons have been disqualified from this seasons competition for fielding an illegible player. Their place in Round 2 will now be filled by Bilston Town.
